Compared to steel titanium is resistant to corrosion, very lightweight and extremely durable at the same time. As a result contact of titanium with oxygen a passivation layer of titanium oxide with a thickness of about 2 nm is formed on its surface and that increases resistance to corrosion. Lightweight and high strength in relation to the material density and high melting point mean that titanium is used to build the most modern aircraft, including stealth fighters and space shuttles.
